Winter Monkey Button Cover

This button cover is made entirely in one hooping with a stitched guideline to make them easy to use with Fabric Covered Button Kits.  I used the Dritz Covered Button Kits.  This button cover will fit 1 1/2" buttons.

Winter Monkey Button Cover

1. Hoop one layer of tearaway stabilizer.

Stitch first color (fabric placement outline).

Cover outline completely with a piece of fabric.

Stitch second color to secure.

2.  Stitch third color (monkey head).

Stitch fourth color (monkey face).

Stitch fifth color (monkey eyes).

Stitch sixth color (monkey nose).

Stitch seventh color (monkey mouth).

Stitch eighth color (monkey hat).

Stitch ninth color (hat trim and pompom).

Remove from hoop.  Trim around perimeter of circle stitching right next to stitching.  Remove excess tearaway stabilizer inside design.

Assemble button according to button kit instructions. 

Monkey 5x7 Hand Puppet:

1. Hoop 1 layer of cutaway stabilizer.

Center a 7x9" piece of felt on top of hooped stabilizer.

Stitch first color to secure.

2. Stitch second color (monkey head fabric placement outline).

Cover outline completely with a piece of fabric.

Stitch third color to secure.

Trim fabric as closely to outline as possible being careful not to cut stitching or fabric underneath.

Stitch fourth color (head satin stitching).

Stitch fifth color (monkey face).

Stitch sixth color (monkey facial features).

3.  Stitch seventh color (hat).

4.   Stitch eighth color (pompom fabric placement outline).

Cover outline completely with a piece of fabric.

Stitch ninth color to secure.

Trim fabric as closely to outline as possible being careful not to cut stitching or fabric underneath.

Stitch tenth color (pompom satin stitching and hat trim fabric placement outline).

Cover outline completely with a piece of fabric.

Stitch 11th color to secure.

Trim fabric as closely to outline as possible being careful not to cut stitching or fabric underneath.

Stitch 12th color (hat trim satin stitching).

5.  Float a second piece of 7x9" felt UNDER hooped design.

Stitch final color to secure.

Remove from hoop. Trim around perimeter of design.

You're finished!

 Winter Monkey Book Buddy Instructions

1. Hoop one or two layers of heavy duty WSS stabilizer (I prefer Badgemaster for the best results!).

Stitch the first color (book buddy fabric placement outline and ribbon placement outline).  Do NOT place fabric on outline yet.

Place a 12" piece of 5/8 - 7/8" ribbon centered over ribbon placement outline with approximately 1/2" of ribbon extending over top of ribbon outline in design area.

2.  Stitch second color to secure ribbon.

IMPORTANT:  Tape ribbon down so it does not become entangled in presser foot in future steps.

3.  Place a piece of fabric on top of book buddy fabric placement outline covering completely.  Stitch third color to secure.

4.  Stitch the fourth color (monkey head).
Stitch fifth color monkey face).

Stitch sixth color (monkey facial features).

Stitch seventh color (hat).

Stitch eighth color (hat trim and pompom).

5.  Place a second piece of fabric UNDER hoop stabilizer, RIGHT SIDE facing DOWN.  Stitch 9th color (book buddy outline) to secure.

6.  Remove hoop from machine, but do NOT remove fabric stabilizer from hoop!

Carefully trim fabric top AND bottom closely around perimeter of turkey design being careful not to cut stabilizer or ribbon.  Replace hoop in machine.

8.   Stitch 10th color (book buddy satin stitching).

9.  Remove from hoop and carefully trim wss away from design.  Remove tape from ribbon.

You're finished!

5x7 Winter Monkey Chalk Mat

1. Hoop one layer of stabilizer.

Place a 7x9" piece of fabric on top of stabilizer, centered.

Stitch first color to secure.

2. Stitch second color (monkey head).

Stitch third color (monkey face).

Stitch fourth color (monkey facial features).

Stitch fifth color (monkey hat).

Stitch sixth color (hat trim and pompom).

3.  Stitch seventh color (chalk fabric placement outline).

Cover outline completely with a piece of chalk fabric.

Stitch eighth color to secure.

Trim chalk fabric as closely to outline stitching as possible being careful not to cut stitching or fabric underneath.

Stitch ninth color (chalk fabric satin stitching).


4.  Stitch tenth color (ribbon tie placement outline).

Cut a 24" piece of narrow ribbon and fold in half.

Place folded ribbon centered over placement outline with approximately 1/2" of ribbon loop extending outside design and rest of ribbon within design area.

Stitch 11th color to secure.


5.  Cut a 6x6" piece of fabric and fold in half and press so it is 3x6".

Place folded fabric over left hand side of design with folded edge even with left hand side of chalk fabric so folded edge is lying vertically across design and entire design LEFT of the chalkboard is completely covered.

Stitch 12th color to secure.

7.  Place a second 7x9" piece of fabric on top of design, FACE DOWN, covering design completely.

Stitch 13th color to secure.

Remove from hoop.

Trim around perimeter of design leaving approximately 1/4-1/2" seam allowance.

Turn right side out.

Flip pocket to back to enclose seam.

Place piece of chalk inside pocket.

Roll up and tie with ribbon.

You're finished!

HELPFUL HINT:  If you will press the chalk mat with a hot iron BEFORE turning right side out, the chalk fabric will be slightly more flexible and easier to turn.  AFTER turning, you can again press the mat WITH A PRESSING CLOTH to remove any white marks. :)

NOTE:  Do not iron chalk fabric directly without a pressing mat. It is vinyl and will melt! :)

5x7 Winter Monkey Applique Instructions:

1. Hoop item to be appliqued as desired.

2. Stitch first color (monkey head fabric placement outline).

Cover outline completely with a piece of fabric.

Stitch second color to secure.

Trim fabric as closely to outline as possible being careful not to cut stitching or fabric underneath.

Stitch third color (head satin stitching).

Stitch fourth color (monkey face fabric placement outline).

Cover outline completely with a piece of fabric.

Stitch fifth color to secure.

Trim fabric as closely to outline as possible being careful not to cut stitching or fabric underneath.

Stitch sixth color (face satin stitching).

Stitch seventh color (monkey facial features).

3.  Stitch eight color (hat fabric placement outline).

Cover outline completely with a piece of fabric.

Stitch ninth color to secure.

Trim fabric as closely to outline as possible being careful not to cut stitching or fabric underneath.

Stitch tenth color (hat satin stitching).

4.   Stitch 11th color (pompom fabric placement outline).

Cover outline completely with a piece of fabric.

Stitch 12th color to secure.
