Pocket Hangers Pictorial

Our new pocket hangers are a cute in the hoop project that will come in handy for helping to organize all those tiny little treausures!

Our sample hanger has three pockets, but you can make as many for your hanger as you wish!

Pocket Hangers are handy for storing small sewing notions!  Include a gift card for the fabric store for a special gift for a sewing friend!

Fill the pockets with lip gloss and nail polish for that special teen!

Small toy cars and sweets are sure to please the little guy in your life!

You're sure to find a hundred uses for these fun hangers!

NEEDED:  fabric, 1/2" buttons (7/16"  or 3/8" buttons for the Butterfly Pocketholder), a 7 1/2" length of ribbon, water soluble stablizer.

PLEASE NOTE:  Measurements given are for the 4x4 hanger.  Measurements for the 5x7 hanger are in parentheses.

1. Take an 8x5" (12x8") piece of fabric and iron a 4x5" (6x8") piece of Heat N Bond or Wonder Under along half of it following manufacturer's instructions.

2.  Remove paper backing, fold in half, and iron, sandwiching the heatn'bond/wonder under between two layers of the fabric. This will be your pocket.  If desired, you can embroider a word or design onto the pocket at this point, before continuing your hanger.  Embroider with the folded edge at the top.  Your finished pocket area will be approximately 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" (6 1/2" x 3 1/2") high so your design or wording must fit in that area.

3.  Hoop 1-2 layers of WSS.  I like Ultra Solvey for this project, and used 1 layer.  2 layers of tearaway stabilizer may also be used, but might not leave quite as clean a finish.

4.  Place a 5 x 5 (6x8) piece of fabric onto your hoop and an additional 5x5 (6x8) piece of fabric on the back of the hoop with wrong sides of fabric touching hoop on each side.  Carefully pin in place around the edges and place hoop on machine.  Do a trial layout to insure that the needle will not hit the pins.  (If you wish you can do a basting stitch instead of pinning or float these pieces instead.)

5.  Sew the embroidery design to the first stop.

6.  Carefully trim front fabric along edge of stitching.  The closer you get to the stitching, the nicer your finished product will look!  I like to use tiny curved embroidery scissors and I pull slightly on the top fabric as I trim for a nice close cut.  Some people prefer duckbilled applique scissors.

7. Repeat step 6 for the fabric on the back.

8.  Place pocket on the horizontal guide line of the hooped wss/fabric.  You can pin in place if desired, but I prefer to simply hold it lightly in place.   Stitch to the next stop of the embroidery design.

9. Carefully trim excess pocket fabric along stitching line.

10.  Replace hoop and sew to next stop.  Check for any stray fibers and trim if necessary.

11.  Sew until next Stop.  The pocket is now complete.  If this pocket will hang below another pocket, you will need to sew to the next stop to add the buttonholes.  If this is the top pocket, you can skip the final stop as the buttonholes are not needed on the top pocket.

12.  Carefully remove the WSS from your pocket.  If the pocket is not the bottom pocket of your hanger, sew a button in each of the two lower corners of the pocket.

13. If the pocket is to be the top pocket of your hanger, then sew a 7 1/2" piece of ribbon on the top two corners with buttons if desired.  If the pocket is a lower pocket then open the buttonholes with a seam ripper or tiny scissors.  If you apply fray check before opening the buttonholes, it will leave a nice clean edge.

14.  Make the desired number of pockets and button together and your hanger is complete!
