When a friend of mine told me about chalkboard fabric, I just HAD to have some!
I immediately ordered it and began work on this new set before it even arrived!

This stuff is even more awesome than I expected!

Chalkboard fabric is like a vinyl fabric, but works just like a chalkboard!  It can be drawn on with chalk and easily erased with a damp cloth.

And what better use for chalkboard fabric than a fun tote for on the go to keep the little ones busy!

I digitized chalkboards in two different sizes (for the 5x7 and 4x4 hoops) and added another 4x4 chalkboard with a fun tic tac toe set sewn on!

Then we needed someplace to actually PUT the chalk!  So chalk pocket appliques were the perfect answer!  And even better, they hold crayons, too!

I embroidered the chalkboards and chalk/crayon pockets onto a fun placemat.

I added two grosgrain ribbon straps (just a simple straight stitch) to mine when I was finished.

I then placed an identical placemat behind the first and straight stitched around the sides and bottom.

Now Sarah has a handy tote big enough for her coloring books, art pads, and all those other little necessities that keep her happy and entertained in the car, on a plane, or in a restaurant!

We wanted a jumbo tote, so I used two placemats, but by placing the pockets on just half of the placemat, you can then fold it and stitch the sides shut to make a smaller tote!

Or skip adding the second placement and stitch a length of ribbon to one end for a fabulous placemat roll-up!

The number of things you can stitch these chalkboard appliques and chalk/crayon pockets on are endless!

Chalkboard Pockets Instructions:

Chalkboards

1.  Hoop one layer of cutaway stabilizer.

2.  Pin placemat or fabric to stabilizer.

3. Stitch first color (chalkboard outline).

4. Place a piece of chalkboard fabric on top of outline so it extends beyond the edges of the outline.  (6x6" for the 4x4 chalkboards, or 7x9 for the 5x7 chalkboards).

5.  Stitch the second color to secure in place.

6.  Trim chalkboard fabric very close to the stitching outline.

7.  Stitch the third color (satin stitching).

8.  If stitching the tic tac toe board, stitch the final color which is the tic tac toe grid.

Crayon/Chalk Pockets:

1.  Hoop one layer of cutaway stabilizer.

2. Pin placemat or fabric to stabilizer.

3. Stitch first color (pocket outline).

4.  Fold a 5x8" piece of fabric in half and press well.   Place the folded piece of fabric on top of the outline so the folded edge is even with the top of the stitching on the sides.

5.  Stitch the second color to secure in place.

6.  Trim fabric very close to the stitching outline on sides and bottom.

7. Stitch the third color (pocket guidelines).

8.  Stitch the final color (satin stitching).
