The newest Blanket Buddies are an In The Hoop Project for the 5x7 and the 4x4 hoops!
Each one comes in two sizes. Make either the large or small one depending on your hoop capability, or make the large one for your little one and the smaller one for a favorite doll for a matching set!

They can be made with fleece or minky for a cuddly soft bedtime friend for your favorite little one!
They're totally sewn in the hoop except for one small straight seam which is sewn shut by hand.

PLEASE DO NOT ADD BOWS OR OTHER ADORNMENTS if your blanket buddy is to given to an infant or small toddler!
I made Sarah's Blanket Buddies using 24" square flannel, hemmed. and the small blanket buddies using 16" square flannel, hemmed. You can also vary the size of your blankets, or use prepurchased receiving blankets. You must be EXTRA CAREFUL if using a fleece blanket to make certain your presser foot does not slip between the layers of fleece. You can sew your own blanket by hemming a simple square of flannel, minky, fleece or satin!
The Blanket Buddies Pictorial is listed at the bottom of this page.
I've added two new Blanket Buddy sets to the website! The first is a sweet Monkey Blanket Buddy. The second is a funky sock monkey Blanket Buddy!

Blanket Buddies Instructions:
The Kitty/Tiger and Seal Blanket Buddies are made just like the bear blanket buddies. The number of colors stitched for the faces may vary slightly. :) Instructions are given for the Bear Blanket Buddy. (Measurements for the 4x4 blanket buddies are given in parentheses.)
1. Hoop one layer of tearaway stabilizer.
2. Sew the first color stitch (bear outline).
3. Without unhooping, pin one piece of 5x7 (5x5) fabric such as fleece or minky on top of the stabilizer covering the outline completely. Be certain that the pins are not in the needle's path! Stitch the second color stitch to secure fabric.
4. Stitch the next two colors (third and fourth colors) ( (bear's muzzle, eyes, nose and mouth).
5. Stitch the fifth color (rectangle outline). This shows the area to place the blanket.

6. Take your blanket and fold in half into a triangle with wrong sides together.

7. Now fold each of the sides toward the center.

8. Center the top of the folded blanket so the top point extends past the rectangle outline on the bear. The sides of the blanket should fit within the rectangle with approximately a 1/4" margin to spare on each side. Carefully pin in place making certain no pins will be in the needle's path.
See picture.

9. Sew the sixth color to secure blanket. BE CAREFUL IN THIS STEP that your presser foot does not slip underneath the blanket. If desired you can use a piece of tape to keep the blanket in place and simply remove it after stitching.
10. Trim the top of the blanket right at the top of the rectange stitching outline.
See picture.

12. Stitch the seventh color (ribbon placement outline).
13. Place a piece of 5/8" ribbon across the bottom of the bear so the top of the ribbon is right above the ribbon placement outline.

14. Sew the eighth color to secure ribbon. Pin at the sides and secure along the edge with tape if desired. Again, be careful that the presser foot does not slip under the ribbon.

15. Place a second 5x7" (5x5) piece of fabric on top of the hooped fabric RIGHT SIDE DOWN. Stitch the final color (bear outline).

16. Remove the fabric from hoop. Trim, leaving a 1/4" seam and clipping turns and corners well.
Turn right side out. Stuff as desired with polyfil. Stitch opening closed by hand.
You're done!
