Travel Sewing Folder Instructions:
1. Hoop one layer of cutaway stabilizer.
Stitch first color (fabric placement outline).
2. Lay one piece of 6x8 batting on top of hooped stabilizer covering outline completely. Lay one piece of 6x8" fabric on top of batting.
3. Stitch second color to secure in place and to stitch center folding line.
4. Stitch third color (scissor pocket fabric placement outline).
5. Press a 3 1/2 x 7" piece of fabric in half so it is 3 1/2 x 3 1/2". Place fabric on top of scissor pocket fabric outline stitching so folded edge is even with the top straight stitching line of pocket. Stitch the fourth color to secure in place.
6. Trim pocket fabric as closely to stitching as possible without cutting stitching. Stitch fifth color (scissor pocket satin stitching).
Tape scissor pocket opening securely shut to ensure that presser foot does not become entangled in it in next steps.
7. Stitch sixth color (scissor ribbon placement line).
Cut a 36" piece of narrow ribbon and fold in half to form a loop. Place ribbon over ribbon placement line so approximately 1/2" of cut ribbon ends extend OUTSIDE design area and remainder of ribbon loop is INSIDE design area.
Stitch seventh color to secure.
8. Stitch eighth color (pincushion fabric placement line).
Cover pincushion entirely with a scrap piece of fleece.
Layer a second scrap piece of fleece on top of first.
Top with a piece of fabric, covering both layers of fleece.
Stitch ninth color to secure.
Trim all three layers of pincushion fabrics as closely to stitching as possible being very careful not to cut stitching or fabric underneath.
I find it easiest to trim one layer at a time to get a very close trim. I use good quality small curved scissors, also.
Stitch tenth color (pincushion area satin stitching).
Trim away any fuzzies from fleece around pincushion satin stitching area.
8. Stitch 11th color (Elastic loop placement outline).
Cut a 3" piece of narrow 1/8" elastic.
Fold elastic in half to form a 1 1/2" loop.
Place loop centered over elastic placement outline so loop is INSIDE design area and approximately 1/2" of elastic ends extend OUTSIDE design area.
Tape in place if desired.
Stitch 12th color to secure.
9. Cut an 8x8" piece of fabric and fold in half and press so it is 4x8".
Place folded fabric on top of design so entire lower half of design is completely covered.
Folded edge should be even with folded edge of scissor pocket.
Stitch 13th color to secure pocket.
10. Place a 6x8" piece of fabric FACE DOWN on top of hooped design, covering design completely.
Stitch 14th color to secure.
11. Remove from hoop and trim around perimeter of design leaving approximately 1/4-1/2" seam allowance. Clip corners.
Turn right side out. Press.
Flip large pocket to front of design (opposite side of scissor pocket and pincushion).
Stitch a 1" button on the right hand edge of the pocket on the front of folder.
Fold in half and secure with elastic loop.
You're finished!
